What is your super power?

ree

One of the things I like most about being a therapist is watching how my clients grow, and then hearing about how their growth triggers changes in those around them! Sometimes I even spot the results of that personal growth on social media, eg the engagement of a client who spent time with me over anxiety regarding forming relationships and social interaction.

I am not going to write about the affect on other members of the household when a member has depression, anxiety, anger management or a substance abuse related problem etc. That is well documented elsewhere. We all know someone who is always negative and the effect that spending time with them can have on our own happiness and sense of well being.

No, I would rather share about those who mention conversationally, in session, a positive change they have noticed in a family member, or the person they car pool with, or a work colleague. A welcome difference they have noticed in a the dynamics of a relationship.

This change is totally understandable because when we work on a client's preferred future they become more confident, motivated, happier and nicer to be around. The effect is that the client's physiology and demeanour change so that people respond to them in a more positive way. That builds their confidence and happiness further, making them even easier to spend time with ... improving confidence and happiness ... and so it goes on ... but there is also a very real possibility of lasting, permanent change for the client's family and friends.

Solution focused therapists teach ways of improving the client's mental state, which can then be deliberately shared with family/friends and will be subconsciously modelled to people around them, absorbed and copied by those others. The effect firstly radiating outwards from the client and then reflected back towards them so that they feel the positive change in the other person.

The most curious part is that the client rarely adds two and two to realise that it is their new superpower at the root of the change. While they are working on their own, they can now "infect" other people with happiness. A super power worth having.

Your Preferred Future is about You Being Happy to Be You. If you can share the happiness with others, even better. Are you ready for your new superpower?
